You are now approaching the screening area and it is a good idea to approach it in an organized manner.
First put your shoes, coat and your carry-on "personal item" (usually your smaller bag) in the first bin. They will come through the x-ray first, and you can be putting them back on while you're waiting for your other items to be screened.

It is more common now for people to carry laptop computers o to the plane. Take the laptop out of the carry case and put the case in the first bin so you can be ready to put the laptop back with the minimum of fuss.
